Public Art: Mother of the Sea

The Mother of the Sea, maybe the most well-known of all Greenlandic myths and tales, is a statue along the coast. The Mother of the Sea, according to tradition, was irritated by the Inuits' terrible activities at the settlement and, as a punishment, collected all the animals the Inuits used to hunt in her flaming hair at the bottom of the sea. When "The Blind One" arrived to help, he combed her hair, gathered the dirt in a clump, and then flung it away. Everything came to life at the same time, and there was a bear, fox, hooded seal, bearded seal, ringed seal, harp seal, common seal, walrus, narwhal, and a slew of birds."
