Walking tour “Royal Castle and the old town” in Warsaw
The tour begins in the Castle Square near the famous Sigismund Column, the oldest monument in Warsaw. Then we pass to visit the Royal Castle crossing the courtyard with fragments of the medieval castle of dukes of Masovia. The interiors of the Royal Castle consist of many important state rooms like the Great Assembly Hall, the Throne Room (with royal throne) and the Marble Room with portraits of kings. Then we went to the Royal Apartments where kings lived and the Royal Chapel (with royal sceptre and coronation sword on display).
Next to it is a very interesting Canaletto room with 18th c. views of Warsaw. The visit of the Castle concludes in the Lanckoroński Gallery with dozens of pictures from the Royal collection (among them paintings by famous Rembrandt).Next part of our tour includes the Old Town established in the Middle Ages as a typical medieval city. During World War II the Old Town was destroyed then rebuilt in the post-war period. Warsaw’s Old Town and the Castle are on the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage.
We continue visiting the Warsaw Cathedral (the oldest church in Warsaw), then Market Square with a statue of the Mermaid (official emblem of Warsaw), then we go to see the Vistula river.Final part of our walk is the Barbican fortress and the monument to the Little Insurgent standing nearby, commemorating young soldiers who died during the Warsaw Uprising 1944.
